Jewelry Care Guide
Simple habits and gentle cleaning steps to keep plated brass chains, S925 studs and VVS1 moissanite shining.
Updated October 24, 2026
A few simple habits keep your Icevana pieces looking the way they did when they left our factory. Our chains and bracelets are plated brass and our stud earrings are plated S925 sterling silver, so gentle care is what keeps the finish and the VVS1 moissanite at their brightest.
Everyday habits
- Last on, first off. Put your jewelry on after lotion, cologne, perfume and hair products, and take it off before bed.
- Keep it away from water. Remove your pieces before showering, swimming, using a hot tub or doing the dishes. Chlorine and salt water are especially hard on plating.
- Keep it away from chemicals. Perfume, sprays, cleaning products and sweat all wear on a plated finish over time.
- Take it off for workouts. Sweat and impact can dull the finish and put strain on clasps and settings.
- Wipe after wearing. A quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth removes skin oils before they build up.
Chains and bracelets: 14K gold or platinum plated brass
Our Cuban link and tennis pieces are crafted on a brass base and finished in 14K gold or platinum plating. Plating is a surface finish, so treat it gently:
- After each wear, wipe the piece with a soft, dry microfiber or polishing cloth.
- To lift dust from around the stones, use a soft, dry brush, working gently in the direction of the links.
- For a deeper clean, lightly dampen the cloth with water and a drop of mild soap, wipe the stones, then dry the piece completely right away. Never soak or submerge plated pieces.
- Let the piece air-dry fully on a cloth before you put it away.
Stud earrings: plated S925 sterling silver
Our studs are S925 sterling silver finished in 14K gold or white gold. Silver can darken over time when it is exposed to air and moisture, and earrings collect skin oils on the posts and backs.
- Wipe the stones, posts and push backs with a soft cloth after wearing.
- To clean, brush the stones gently with a soft brush and a little mild soapy water, rinse quickly and dry thoroughly, posts and backs included.
- Store your studs in a small, closed pouch or box to limit exposure to air and humidity.
Caring for VVS1 moissanite
Moissanite is one of the hardest gemstones used in jewelry, rating 9.25 on the Mohs scale, so it resists everyday scratches and does not cloud. When stones look less brilliant, it is almost always a film of lotion, oil or dust on the back of the stone blocking light. A gentle clean as described above brings the sparkle back.
What to avoid
| Avoid | Why |
|---|---|
| Soaking, showering and swimming | Water, chlorine and salt water wear on plating |
| Perfume, lotion and hairspray on the piece | Chemicals dull the finish and leave a film on the stones |
| Toothpaste and baking soda | Abrasive; scratches polished and plated surfaces |
| Bleach, ammonia and acetone | Strip plating and can discolor metal |
| Ultrasonic cleaners and jewelry dips | Too harsh for plated finishes and small settings |
| Paper towels and tissues | Leave fibers caught in prongs and can scratch |
Storage
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or its own compartment, so stones and links do not rub against other jewelry. Keep your jewelry in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of steamy bathrooms. Lay chains flat or hang them to prevent tangles and kinks, and close clasps before storing.
Check clasps and settings
Every so often, check that your clasp closes with a firm click and that the stones sit level and tight. If a stone looks loose or a clasp feels weak, stop wearing the piece and contact us. Our Quality Promise explains what to do if your piece arrives with a manufacturing defect.
